Intro to Creating Facial Blendshapes in Maya Course Free Download
The face is one of the most complex parts of the human body, and understanding facial movements is even more difficult. The ability to separate facial movements into key shapes that can be used together to form expressions not only simplifies the face, but also makes it possible to recreate those shapes in computer graphics and animate complex expressions.
In this 5-hour workshop by Derrick Sesson, Facial Modeling Specialist at Digital Domain, you’ll learn all the basics of facial shape modeling. This workshop assumes you have no prior knowledge of blendshapes and will walk you through the entire facial process using Autodesk Maya. Derrick will start with a detailed explanation of FACS (Facial Action Coding System) before preparing the ZBrush head for deformation, breaking down the basic shapes needed for each area of the face, and locking in those shapes using deformers like clusters.
He’ll show you how to enhance these shapes using Maya’s sculpting tools before combining them all into a blendshape node. The concepts and lessons in this workshop will give you a fundamental understanding of FACS and how to create blendshapes, giving you all the skills you need to create a set of face blendshapes that will give you control over transforming your face into any expression you like.
The head model shown throughout the workshop was created by the talented team at 3dscanstore.com and is available for free. The skills gained can also be applied to other character head models.
