Covering programming concepts, logic, algorithms and more, you’ll learn how to not only create advanced, unique effects, but also understand when to use them in a real-world environment.
After learning all of the content in this course, you will be able to approach difficult and challenging problems with a new perspective, carrying the lessons learned into new territory with ease.
WEEK 1 – Introduction to VEX
Introduction to VEX, programming and logic. You’ll learn about why you would want to use VEX over methods such as SOPs, and understand more of Houdini’s functionality under the hood. We will end this week learning useful debugging tips, as well as writing code for some small starter projects.
WEEK 2 – Visualizing with VEX
More advanced concepts in VEX and programming, as well as a look at the unique ways you can access geometry, groups and attributes inside of a wrangle. We end this week by creating our own custom ambient occlusion shader, using ray-casting methods.
WEEK 3 – VOLUMES, GEOMETRY & PIXELS
An introduction to the 2D side of VEX, learning more about how pixels and images are represented in Houdini. We learn basic 2D operations and algorithms – as well as how to use ray-casting and sampling to create a custom Mari-style texture baker.
WEEK 4 – Vellum forces
Thinking dynamically with VEX in the context of a solver, using custom logic to influence fluids with forces. We simulate surface tension, create gravity around objects, and understand fundamentally how our wrangle’s code updates temporally.
WEEK 5 – Algorithms & Clustering
We learn about implementing a well known algorithm, in the form of clustering and K-Means. We use the unsupervised machine learning algorithm as the basis for a larger project – an embroidery setup that only requires a single image as an input.
WEEK 6 – VEX FOR MOTION & DYNAMIC CONSTRAINTS
We plan a larger, 3 week project through a motion design lens. We learn how to dynamically generate and update vellum constraints, creating unique programmatic connections as part of a complex cloth simulation.
WEEK 7 – Knit Pattern System
This is the final week of our VEX project, where we will put the Creating a knit pattern with VEX based on UV patches, with a point-pair intersection system designed to ensure that our pattern will always be the perfect size for translation. touches on the system we have designed so far.
WEEK 8 – Square Marching Knit & Rendering
Putting the final touches on the project, creating a second underlying crochet knit using square marching. We create a larger effect over our motion design using these two knits, and finish the project by using VEX tricks and Karma, Solaris to light and render our scene.
